The other is the odd duck, a soaring platform converted from a mobile oil rig, with 10 massive legs atop two pontoons the size of Trident submarines. Together, the two vessels, berthed side-by-side at the Port of Long Beach, comprise the fleet of Sea Launch, the world's first and only ocean-based satellite-launching enterprise of its kind. The international mix has worked well, with the operation expecting to loft six satellites into orbit this year, for a variety of customers from around the world. Read more... Return to top |
