Opportunities in Latin America

Trade with Latin America represents currently about 1 percent of the cargo moving through the Port, but today's world is a dynamic one and Port officials recognize that Latin America is a vast land of opportunity.
"We all know that Asia is our bread and butter when it comes to trade, but we also have seen the importance of emerging markets and none is more important than Latin America," said Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners Vice President Thomas Fields.

Port Adopts $942 Million Budget

The Port of Long Beach has adopted a $942 million budget that reflects a 12 percent increase for the coming fiscal year, tied to the Port's aggressive investment in infrastructure and environmental projects. For the 2013 fiscal year that begins October 1, the Port plans to invest $720 million in capital projects that include redevelopment of the Middle Harbor Terminal and replacement of the Gerald Desmond Bridge. Harbor Commissioners approved the spending plan at their June 4 meeting. The Port's budget is subject to final approval by the Long Beach City Council.

Green Flag Awards

The Port honored 14 ocean carriers that are "the best of the best" environmental partners at its annual Green Flag Awards luncheon June 5. The companies represent a select group of ocean carriers with 90 percent or higher participation for 2011 in the Port's Vessel Speed Reduction Program. The program has been instrumental in cutting diesel emissions from all port-related sources by 72 percent since 2005.

Wise Re-elected Harbor Commission President

Susan E. Anderson Wise will serve another year as President of the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners. At its June 4 meeting, the Board unanimously re-elected Wise, who was appointed to the Commission in 2008. Commissioner Thomas Fields was re-elected Vice President, and Commissioner Nick Sramek was voted Secretary. Commissioners Rich Dines and Doug Drummond will serve as Vice Secretaries.

Streamlined Board Meetings

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners has opted to hold two public meetings monthly. The meetings now are held on the first and third Mondays of each month, alternating with one during the day and the other in the evening. The new schedule seeks to give commissioners and the public more time to review upcoming agenda items and increase public participation. The change is in effect for 90 days after which the Board will decide whether to make it permanent.

Executive Search

The Port has launched a nationwide search for a new Deputy Executive Director. The No. 2 management post has been vacant since J. Christopher Lytle, who held the position since March 2008, was promoted to Executive Director in November. The position, which functions as Chief Operating Officer, supports the Executive Director in the planning, organizing, directing and managing the day-to-day operations at one of the world's busiest seaports and a leading gateway for international trade. The deadline to apply is July 20.

Cargo Volumes Dip in May

Container traffic at the Port fell 7.2 percent in May compared with the same period a year ago. Imports dropped 9.2 percent, and exports were relatively flat. Factors include the elimination of several niche service strings that called at the Port last year.

Best Seaport in North America

For the 15th time in 17 years, the Port of Long Beach was named "Best Seaport in North America" by Cargonews Asia. The award is voted on annually by thousands of importers, exporters, ocean carriers and other logistics and supply chain professionals. The Port and other honorees were recognized June 4 at the Asian Freight & Supply Chain Awards dinner in Shanghai.

Pulse of the Port

The latest episode of the award-winning "Pulse of the Port" shines the spotlight on Jacobsen Pilot Service, which has been guiding ships in the harbor since the 1920s. It also features the historic kickoff of the Middle Harbor Terminal Project, a rendezvous with the space-age Sea Launch platform, an insider's look at the California Maritime Academy's TS Golden Bear - a former Navy ship turned floating college campus - and more.

A second mega ship, the MSC Altair, made its first North American call at the Port of Long Beach in early June.

The Port of Long Beach is a gold sponsor of the 2012 Long Beach Sea Festival, supporting more than 70 arts and entertainment events throughout the Long Beach community from June through September.

The new Pier G Maintenance & Repair Building at the Port's International Transportation Service (ITS) Container Terminal has won a 2012 Golden Nugget Award for excellence in innovation and design from the California Building Industry Association's PCBC (Pacific Coast Builders Conference).
