A Push for Exports

The Port of Long Beach is one of the country's leading export gateways; it handles close to $35 billion worth of outbound cargo a year. Still, Port leaders see tremendous potential for growth. To help regional businesses increase exports, the Port is sponsoring a number of trade events this spring and summer, starting with the International Trade Outlook conference on May 16 at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach. The conference will focus on opportunities brought on by the recent free trade agreement with South Korea. In the fall, the Port will launch more outreach programs to directly support potential exporters in Southern California.

Port, OOCL Finalize Historic Lease

The historic $4.6 billion, 40-year lease between Orient Overseas Container Line and the Port of Long Beach was signed April 3 at OOCL's headquarters in Hong Kong. Port Executive Director J. Christopher Lytle and OOCL CEO Phillip Chow finalized the agreement for OOCL's subsidiary, Long Beach Container Terminal, LLC, to operate the new Middle Harbor container terminal. The lease formalizes the parties' long-term commitment to run the cleanest, most efficient container terminal and set new business and environmental standards for the industry.

Cargo Volumes Rebound

Containerized imports through the Port jumped 18.3 percent and exports rose 10 percent in March compared with the same period a year ago. Overall, container traffic was up 12 percent for the month. The increase comes on the heels of a decline in February, which was linked to the Chinese New Year holidays in Asia. The Port is forecasting modest growth in trade volume overall during 2012.

EPA Chief Tours Port

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa P. Jackson toured the Port of Long Beach April 19. Jackson came for a firsthand look at the Port's green initiatives, which have achieved dramatic across-the-board reductions in air pollution and are on track to cut harmful emissions even more. During her visit, the EPA chief viewed innovations in tugboats, shore power and terminal redevelopment while aboard a Port pilot boat equipped with a low-emission engine that was funded with an EPA grant.

2012 Port Scholars

The Port of Long Beach awarded nearly $60,000 in scholarships to 29 local students to help them pursue careers in international trade and goods movement. The scholars, including college-bound high school seniors, trade students and mid-career professionals in advanced degree programs, were honored at a formal ceremony April 17.

Pulse of the Port

New docks, new ships and new educational initiatives building on the Port's longstanding relationship with local schools are featured in the latest "Pulse of the Port" episode. The award-winning program also includes a segment on how things that don't fit neatly into a container – windmills, recreational vehicles and helicopters, for example – are shipped through the Port.

Seafood Feast

The 25th Annual Seafood Feast Scholarship Fundraiser will take place June 13 in San Pedro from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event is hosted by the Propeller Club of Los Angeles-Long Beach, the Port of Long Beach, the Port of Los Angeles, and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. Tickets are $40 and must be purchased in advance.

Steamship Dinner Dance

The Port of Long Beach is a sponsor of the 61st Steamship Dinner Dance hosted by the Propeller Club of Los Angeles-Long Beach. The event will be held June 2 at the Westin Long Beach Hotel, and honorees include the Port of Long Beach, the Port of Los Angeles, Union Pacific, BNSF and Pacific Harbor Line.
