Port Commission Meetings Now Broadcast Live
The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners is
broadcasting its meetings live via the web,
with rebroadcasts on cable television. The Port is airing the Harbor Commissionís regular meetings,
at 1 p.m. on Mondays, at www.polb.com.
Ships "Plug In" to Cut Pollution
When ships dock at the Port of Long Beach, the vessels may be still but
the activity actually speeds up. As cargo is loaded and off-loaded from
a ship at berth, its pumps are running, lights are shining and machinery
is humming. Traditionally all that motion has been powered by the vesselís
auxiliary engines, which burn diesel fuel. But new efforts at the Port of
Long Beach are changing that practice.
Advanced Scanners Improve Port Security
Port of Long Beach terminals are among the first seaport facilities in the nation to test
improved security scanners that can better pinpoint potential sources of radiation in cargo
containers. The new systems are part of the ongoing efforts by the Port and its security
partners to continually upgrade technology and improve Port safety.
"Peak Season" Delivers the Goods
While most people arenít giving much thought to end-of-the-year holiday shopping
quite yet, preparations are well underway at the Port of Long Beach. The clothing,
electronics, shoes, toys and sporting goods that will be filling store shelves during
the holidays are shipped through the Port in August, September and October, creating a
cargo surge known as the "peak season."
