Port to Close 9th Street Rail Crossing on March 9

Operational closure to improve movement of cargo by rail

The Port of Long Beach plans an operational closure of 9th Street where it crosses railroad tracks near Pico Avenue in the harbor district in West Long Beach as of March 9, 2019. The closure is needed to improve railroad operations at the Port, allowing for the building of longer trains, shifting cargo from trucks to rail.

  • Incentives available under the Port’s Vessel Speed Reduction Program have been extended through the end of 2019. Known as the Port’s Green Flag Program, the incentive offers reduced dockage fees to vessel operators that voluntarily slow their ships to 12 knots or less while entering or leaving the Port within 40 nautical miles of Point Fermin.
  • Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia has been appointed chair of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Ports and Ports and Exports Task Force. The permanent body works on trade, security and other issues in support of ports nationwide. Read more
  • PierPass’s new fee structure is now in effect at the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. Launched Nov. 19, the Traffic Mitigation Fee under the revised OffPeak program has been reduced to $31.52 per twenty-foot equivalent (TEU) container – $63.04 per forty-foot equivalent (FEU) container – but is now charged during all shifts.
