New Technology Boosts Efficiency for Oil Tankers

Crew of Gem 2 with Port and Tesoro officialsHuge oil tankers call at the Port of Long Beach regularly, but never with a full load. But thanks to a new program – the "Octopus" – being tested by Tesoro, tankers can arrive with deeper drafts and heavier loads, increasing efficiency and cutting emissions. Recently the tanker Gem 2 arrived with the deepest draft of a vessel to enter the Port of Long Beach.

Long Beach-Qingdao sister port signing ceremonyAt this year's Trans-Pacific Maritime Conference in Long Beach, Port of Long Beach Interim Deputy Executive Director Duane Kenagy and Chief Commercial Officer Dr. Noel Hacegaba sat down with the Journal of Commerce's Alessandra Barrett to discuss the outlook for 2017. Kenagy gave an update on the Port's capital improvement program, while Hacegaba offered an analysis of the shipping alliances' effect on the industry and a forecast for 2017.   • AndeavorFollowing its June 1 acquisition of Western Refining, Port of Long Beach tenant Tesoro will adopt a new company name, Andeavor, beginning Aug. 1.   • New Port HR Director Stacey LewisThe Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners has approved the selection of Stacey Lewis as Director of Human Resources Services. Lewis, the Port’s Assistant Director of Human Resources, was promoted to Director following the retirement of the previous HR Director. She has been with the Port since 2008. The Harbor Department has approximately 550 employees in 21 divisions. Read more
