Supertanker Ready

Some milestones aren't always visible to the naked eye. When BP's supertanker, the British Pride, called at the Port of Long Beach in December, it made history as the deepest oil tanker ever to berth at a California port.

Cargo's Uptrend

Container volumes at the Port jumped 17.5 percent overall in January, with imports surging 19.5 percent and exports up 8.2 percent compared to the same period a year ago. Cargo volumes at the Port have been rising steadily since the fourth quarter of 2012.

Deal Announced

Mediterranean Shipping Co., the world's second-largest ocean carrier, has increased its investment in the Port by purchasing a stake in the leasehold for marine terminal operations at Pier T. Port Executive Director J. Christopher Lytle made the announcement at the Jan. 31 "State of the Port" address.

Peak Season Forecast

Don't miss this year's "Pulse of the Ports: Peak Season Forecast" scheduled for March 27, from 7 to 10 a.m., at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Long Beach. Walter Kemmsies, Ph.D., chief economist at Moffatt & Nichol, will discuss industry trends, and experts representing importers, exporters, ocean carriers, the ILWU, terminal operators, railroads and trucking companies will offer their insights. Port Scholarships Available

The Port is accepting applications for scholarships for high school seniors and college students pursuing trade-related careers. The application deadline for high school seniors attending school in the Long Beach Unified School District service area is March 1, and the deadline for college students attending Long Beach City College or California State University, Long Beach is March 14.

  • ILWU Local 63's Office Clerical Union agreed Feb. 20 to ratify a labor agreement for a four-year contract with the Harbor Employers Association.
  • The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners has approved five contracts valued at more than $500,000 to support air pollution mitigation projects in Long Beach.
  • Port officials said they expect to relocate administrative headquarters to 4701 Airport Plaza Drive during the second half of 2013.
  • The Port sponsored the 13th Annual California Maritime Leadership Symposium on Feb. 20-21 in Sacramento. The Port will sponsor two upcoming conferences: California State University, Long Beach's annual Regional Economic Forum on April 26, and the 2013 National Homeland Security Conference set for June 4-7 in Los Angeles.
